Everyone's a Winner! August 06, 2005
Overheard in Chicago's O'Hare airport, from one young Navy man to another, "If they let him graduate, I'm gonna kill somebody." Hyperbole aside, what he meant was that a classmate of his had done something so wrong that he did not deserve to be awarded the same credential as him. The 10 Percent Solution: 'Diversity' trumps Academic Preparation June 16, 2004
Recently both Joanne Jacobs and Kimberly Swygert have weighed in on the topic of the "talented tenth." Seems in Texas (and California and Florida) the powers-that-be decided to have a race-neutral university admissions policy--designed to nonetheless improve 'Diversity'--by accepting the top 10% of any high school class in the state, regardless of rigor. Bias and the SAT February 11, 2004
One little paragraph in a Cornell Daily Sun article on the SAT quoted in a post by Kimberly Swygert really got us thinking. A common complaint about the SAT is that it is biased against minorities and the poor. This might be, oh, because minorities and the poor do worse, on average, than other test-takers.
