The Democrats' Plan for Teacher Certification January 02, 2006
In our continuing series on how there's no war on public education, today we tackle Teacher Certification. (In future articles we'll address Mediocrity, Opposition to Competition, Opposition to Home Schooling, Lack of Discipline and Safety, Zero Tolerance Run Amok, and Lack of Accountability.) We've written before on teacher certification and how we feel that the current model is an unnecessary...
Teach For America validated June 09, 2004
Via Eduwonk.com comes a story on a study examining the performance of Teach For America in a number of mostly urban schools. Teach For America places recent college graduates in classrooms in public schools around the country, especially in high-need areas, even though these folks aren't "certified" to teach. Eduwonk writes: The study -- examining TFA teachers in six regions... Posted by ceb into Cert. & Teacher Training

Free Market Triptych (part two): Freedom to Teach May 15, 2004
One of the best ways to solve many of our current educational problems is to have K-12 education join the free market. Most folks who talk about the free market are concerned with the free choices available in the consumer market, as we discussed last time. While "voting with one's wallet" is an extremely potent force, there are two other... Posted by ceb into Cert. & Teacher Training

Removing Hurdles for Prospective New Teachers in Texas February 28, 2004
We learn from Tim Stahmer over at Assorted Stuff that Texas has recently approved a plan to let recent college grads (depending on one's major) essentially pass a test to earn a two-year teaching certificate, without ever setting foot in a College of Education. He writes: I can already hear the cheers of the "reformers" who will say how wonderful... Posted by ceb into Cert. & Teacher Training

Taking Criticism . . . and improving the profession. February 10, 2004
A few days ago we pointed out how the dregs of college-bound high school students are attracted to entering the Education field, and over at Joanne Jacobs' place, it ignited a very lively debate. Unfortunately, some teachers in the audience internalized the negative things some folks were saying about the profession. One such heartfelt response to this perceived "teacher bashing"... Future Teachers and SAT scores February 06, 2004
Each year, over a million college-bound high school students take the SAT test. And each year, The College Board publishes reports which are gold mines of information for statistics junkies like us. We decided to have some fun with the 2003 report (pdf), looking specifically at the average scores for groups of students headed towards different college majors. As you... New Route Needed for Certification January 29, 2004
We've mentioned before that we're not enthusiastic with the entire concept of teacher certification as is stands today. It has two strikes against it, in our view, for not only is an artificial barrier, but it also serves as a process of indoctrination into the values of progressive education. (See our personal experience with certification.) We'd be pleased if principals... Posted by ceb into Cert. & Teacher Training

What's wrong with Constructivism? January 24, 2004
Ms. Frizzle has an interesting post called "Teaching Methods: Just going in circles?" If you read Number2Pencil or Joanne Jacobs or ReformK12 regularly, as I do, you hear a lot of anti-constructivist, anti-ed-schools talk. They don't like the "new" (somewhere between 10-100 years or older) ways of teaching math and reading. We can't speak for our esteemed colleagues, but what... A Personal History of Certification, Teaching and Rebirth January 13, 2004
Here's our story. In college we discovered that teaching would be the only satisfying career choice, but as we began taking courses in the College of Education we noticed there was an extraordinarily low signal-to-noise ratio, often times being less than one! Our skepticism continued after our Bachelor of Science (in Science, not Education), whereupon we enrolled in a Masters... Posted by ceb into Cert. & Teacher Training
