To Skip or Not To Skip (a grade) December 17, 2005
Over at Number 2 Pencil, Kimberly Swygert reports of a friend who has a daughter in Kindergarten, but is academically advanced and socializes with kids older than her. The public school at which she is due to start first grade next year has recommended to my friend that she be allowed to skip it altogether and start in second grade.... Thoughts on parenting, lessons for schooling May 12, 2004
Glenn over at Hi. I'm Black recently became a bit contemplative at the thought of someday having kids. In penning some thoughts on children and parenting he mirrored ideas that are very apropos to the discussion of students and schooling. MENTAL TOUGHNESS. I believe in letting kids being kids, but I also believe that kids should be put in situations... Posted by ceb into Character & Self Esteem

Black Alliance for Educational Options February 27, 2004
Last night we attended an membership reception hosted by the Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) in Philadelphia (at right is Dawn Chavous, chair of the Membership Committee). While we've been a member for about two years, this is the first event we've attended. These folks are passionate about increasing educational options for children--our kind of people! And what is... Myth: "We need more parental involvement!" February 01, 2004
We found an interesting comment over at Assorted Stuff. David C. was publicly stating his yearning for solutions to our school problems, and he wrote, "Personally, I believe that lack of parental involvement is one of the biggest factors bringing down schools today." David is not alone. In water-cooler conversations with our fellow teachers, time and time again the conversation... Posted by ceb into Misconceptions
